•   The following are six new scholarships open to all seniors.  The only requirements are writing the essays.  Further information on these six scholarships will come at a later date to this page.  Until then, all information can be located by navigating through the links.  Each scholarship is worth $1,000.

•   The SDACTE Scholarship  The recipient of this scholarship must meet the following criteria:  -Is graduating from high school with the class of 2011  -Is applying to or accepted by a program at any South Dakota technical institute, OR applying to or accepted into one of the following fields at any South Dakota university:  Health, Business, Trade and Industry, Marketing, Agricultural Education, and Family Consumer Science Education  -He/she will be a full time post-secondary student during the 2011-12 school year  -Has demonstrated scholastic achievement.  For an application, click here.  The due date for applications is April 1, 2011.

 

•   The Ashley and Amanda Loban Memorial Scholarship There will be two (2) $1,500 scholarships awarded to two (2) deserving young people; one from Brookings High School and another from within the State of South Dakota who will continue their first year full time education at a post secondary school.  The scholarship will be awarded based on the student's acts of kindness, good citizenship and humanitarianism.  Nomination for consideration should be submitted by an adult in a supervisory position at school work, church or extracurricular activity and include an overview of the student's activities and the impact those activities have on their school and/or community.  Applications, eligibility requirements, nomination forms and scholarship information can be downloaded at http://www.aaloban.comQuestions concerning the scholarship can be directed to info@aaloban.com.  The scholarship form and letter of nomination must be postmarked on or before April 1, 2011, and be sent to Loban Memorial Inc., PO Box 8091, Brookings SD 57006.

 

•  Michael J. Entringer Scholarships The financial scholarships are awarded in memory of Mike Entringer with proceeds from the annual Mike Entringer Basketball Classics sponsored by the Region II South Dakota High School Basketball Officials. The application may be completed on the computer and printed. Completed applications should be given to Mr. McCune by February 25. Eligibility:
-Student must be a graduating senior from a school in the Region II basketball area.
-Participated in high school sports for two or more years, and exhibited good sportsmanship. Participation includes athletes, cheerleaders, student managers and statisticians.
-Scholarship funds must be used for post secondary education expenses in the first year following graduation.

•  South Dakota Amateur Softball Association  SDASA is pleased to announce that there have been seven $500 scholarships added in 2011 for a total of 17 scholarships at $500 each.  Any graduating senior who has played South Dakota ASA softball, or whose parents/guardians have been involved in softball in the last 3 years, is eligible for this scholarship. 10 (NOW 17) scholarships to be given out each year at $500.00 each. •  Buick Achievers Scholarship Program  The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program is looking to help students who have succeeded both inside and outside the classroom who may not be able to attend a college without financial assistance.  They search for applicants who: -will be enrolling for full-time study as first-time freshmen at a 4-year college or university -plan to major in one of the following: Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Business Administration, Finance, Marketing, or Design -are interested in a career in the automotive or related industries.  Scholarships are given up to $25,000 per year for four years.  Applications are due by March 31.  For further information and eligibility requirements, click here

 

•  Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program  The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program  is a federally-supported program that recognizes exceptionally able high school seniors.  Applicants must: have a grade point average of at least 3.5 on an unweighted 4.0 scale, through the end of the term most recently completed -and- have an ACT score of 30 or above.  Scholarships are awarded to approximately 18 eligible applicants with the highest ACT score and grade point average.  Scholars will be selected from the four divisions of the South Dakota federal district court.  An application can be found online at http://www.doe.sd.gov/secretary/scholarships.asp#Byrd  The application deadline is March 18, 2011.

 

•  South Dakota Association of Conservation District Employees  The SDACDE is offering four $300 scholarships.  The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage those students concerned with conserving their natural resources by furthering their education in an agricultural related field.  The scholarship is available to those attending a four-year college or a vocational college.  Click here for Further Information or a Scholarship Application.  All applications must be post-marked on or before March 31 and sent to:

•  Kingsbury County Cattlemen's Association Scholarship  A Two Hundred and Fifty Dollar ($250.00) scholarship has been established by the KCCA with funds received from projects by the organization.  The applicant must a son, daughter, grandson or granddaughter (or under legal guardianship) of a current active or associate member of the KCCA.  The scholarship will be awarded to South Dakota High School seniors entering a school of higher education the following academic year and/or students currently attending a school of higher education.  Deadline for applications is April 30.  For an application, click here

•  Insuring a Brighter Tomorrow Scholarship Program  Once again this year, Farmers Union Insurance agents are funding the "Insuring a Brighter Tomorrow Scholarship Program" for members of the graduating class of 2011. This program through the Farmers Union Foundation provides 25 $1000 scholarships to students who choose to pursue their post-secondary education at a South Dakota college, university, or trade school.  Deadline for applications is April 15, 2011.  For further information and an application, click below.

•  Kayla Cleveland Memorial Scholarship  The family of Kayla Cleveland has established a scholarship in memory of their daughter.  As a student of one of the schools that participated in the "Playin' With an Angel" basketball tournament, De Smet seniors are eligible for the scholarship.  For a scholarship application and further information, click here  Application deadline is April 1.

 

•  U.S. Bank's Internet Scholarship Program  This program awards scholarships to college-bound high school seniors planning to enroll next fall at an eligible four-year college or university participating in the U.S. Bank No Fee Education Loan Program.  U.S. Bank will offer 40 $1,000 scholarship awards.  Recipients are selected through a random drawing process.  Further details, including college or university eligibility, can be found online at www.usbank.com/scholarship Scholarships will be accepted from October, 2010 through March, 2011.

 

•  Kingbrook Rural Water System, Inc.  Applicant must be a member or a child of a member of Kingbrook Rural Water System.  Students living in area towns served by Kingbrook through a bulk water contract are not eligible.  Currently those towns are Arlington, Badger, Lake Preston, Montrose, Winfred, Bancroft, Lake Norden, Oldham, Iroquois and Howard.  In some cases, a student may live in one of the towns listed by may be a member of Kingbrook at a different location, e.g. lake home or pasture tap.  In this instance, that student would qualify.  Please note the deadline date has changed to March 1st.

 

•  Fred and Marie Christopherson Scholarship Applicants who plan to attend a four-year college or university in South Dakota, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.9 after seven semesters, and have a minimum ACT score of 28 are eligible for this award.  It is available to seniors graduating from South Dakota high schools.  Award: $2,500: Deadline: March 15.  For more information and other scholarships, visit www.sfacf.org

 

•  ESA Foundation Board of Directors offers 125 plus scholarships a year.  Applications are reviewed and processed by the State Counselor and a Regional Scholarships Committee with a final review by the Scholarships Coordinators who submit them for judging to judges throughout the United States.  The information about the scholarships, requirements and applications are available on our website:  Go to www.esintl.com/esaf/scholarship_application.html  Print the application.  Go back to items under ESA Foundation Scholarship and click on Current List of ESAF Scholarships available by State.  Click on STATE to learn which scholarship are applicable for STATE residents.  Print the list.  The student may apply for three scholarships.  The completed application with all of the documentation must submitted to Emmy Neustrom, the ESA Foundation Counselor, by February 1, 2011.  For a complete application, click here

 

•  Burger King Scholars Program $1,000, $5,000, and $25,000 scholarships are now available to all eligible high school seniors and Burger King employees.  Details and how to apply www.haveityourwayfoundation.org/burger_king_scholars_program.html  Application period is Nov. 15, 2010 - Jan. 10, 2011.

 

•  South Dakota Association of Towns & Townships is offering one $1,000 scholarship to a senior high school student who lives in South Dakota and is currently attending a South Dakota public, private, or parochial high school or a home school program.  Graduates of the class of 2011 are eligible to apply for the scholarship.  The student must use the Scholarship for a college, university, or vocational school which has a physical presence in South Dakota.  Deadline for the application is April 1, 2011.

 

•  South Dakota Amateur Softball Scholarship is for any graduating senior who has been involved in the South Dakota ASA program, or who has a parent/guardian who has participated in this program in the last three years.  Application deadline is March 1.  Any questions or concerns, please feel free to call Carol Pipgras at 1-605-334-6374.

 

•  Northern Plains Eye Foundation (NPEF) of Rapid City, South Dakota, is pleased to again announce the availability of $1,000 Health-Care Education Scholarships for the 2011-2012 academic year for high school seniors planning to enter full-time, post high school education in health-care related studies.  Scholarships will be awarded based on overall academic merit, extracurricular and health-care related activities, leadership, letters of recommendation, and planned health-care or eye-related course of study.  Applicants must have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.8 and a minimum ACT score of 28.  The application materials are available on the website, www.npef.org.  Applications must be postmarked by March 1, 2011.

 

•  South Dakota Engineering Society (SDES)  The Eastern Chapter of the South Dakota Engineering Society is currently offering scholarships for high school seniors applying to engineering colleges: $2,000 Engineering Scholarships for 2011 High School Graduates who will be attending South Dakota State University or South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.  The application deadline is February 1, 2011.  Applicants will be judged on national standard test scores, transcripts, extracurricular activities, and answers to questions on the application.  The application form is available at www.sdes.org.  Please contact chrisjibben.jsa@midconetwork.com or (605) 367-1067 if you have any questions concerning the scholarship and/or the application.

 

•  KFC Colonel's Scholars is looking for high school seniors with financial need and an entrepreneurial spirit to qualify for awards of up to $20,000 for tuition, fees, textbooks, room, and board.  To qualify, graduating high school seniors must - earn a minimum high school cumulative GPA of 2.75 - enroll in a public college or university within their state of legal residence - plan to pursue a bachelor's degree - be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident - demonstrate financial need.  Accepting online applications till February 9, 2011 at www.kfcscholars.org.  For questions, visit the website or call toll-free 1-866-KFC-7240.

 

•  Kingsbury Conservation District Scholarhip This scholarship will be given to a current year graduate of a South Dakota High School.  The recipient shall have graduated in the upper 50% of the class.  The recipient will be a student going into an agricultural related field. There will be four $250 scholarships awarded.

•  United States JCI Senate Foundation Scholarship Program  Each year $1,000 grants will be awarded to high school seniors who are U.S. citizens graduating from U.S. accredited schools, and  plan to continue their education at accredited post-secondary colleges, universities or vocational schools.  The number of grants awarded annually will be at the discretion of the United States JCI Senate Foundation.  They must be used for educational expenses in the first year of full-time study.  Checks awarded will be made out in the name of the recipient and the educational institution of their choice.  For scholarship information, click here

 

·         The South Dakota Society for Technology in Education (SDSTE) scholarship committee is pleased to announce this year's scholarship application is now available on the SDSTE website http://www.sdste.k12.sd.us  SDSTE's mission statement "dedicated to the advancement of technology in education" is to help students realize their educational goals by providing an annual scholarship.  Applicants will be judged on academics, work experience, community service, financial needs, goals, and aspirations.  The deadline for applying needs to be postmarked by Friday March 4th, 2011.  there will be two winning applicants in the amount of $500 each.  The SDSTE Scholarship Selection Committee's final selections will be made by the 2011 TIE Conference, April 3-5 in Rapid City, SD.  SDSTE wants to encourage you to pass on the information regarding this scholarship information to a senior in your district who plans on going into the field of Educational of Informational technology.

 

·         Davis-Bahcall Scholarship recipients will have the chance to spend one week of their summer digging deep into the science that is planned for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Lab at Homestake, and that is happening already at the Sanford Underground Laboratory, based in Lead, SD. They will spend three weeks studying physics at Princeton University in New Jersey under world-renowned scholars and researchers. Funding permitting, they will spend a week in Italy, at the Gran Sasso Laboratory, to get a feeling for the dynamic research environment that will be DUSEL in the future.  Application and more details can be found at http://www.doe.sd.gov/secretary/scholarships.asp

·         The Black Hills Stock Show Foundation will be awarding six (6) $2000 scholarships to graduating seniors from South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming or Nebraska who plan to attend a post-secondary institution in one of those states.   An application form and information about the scholarship is available on-line at www.bhssf.comApplication requirements and additional information can be obtained by calling 605-718-0810 or by email at Foundation@BHSSF.com. The scholarship can be renewed one time for a total of $4,000. The application must be received by the Black Hills Stock Show Foundation by December 15, 2010.

·         Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship Application 500 four-year awards are giving out for a total of $2,296,000. Get more information at http://www.elks.org/enf/scholars/mvs.cfm.  Application deadline is November 2.

·         South Dakota Elks Association Vocational Grant applicants must be enrolled or planning to enroll in an accredited post-secondary technical or vocational program which terminates with completion or that program. Applicants shall have no immediate or long range plans to pursue a baccalaureate degree program. Application deadline is November 2.

·         Elks National Foundation scholarship program awards up to 500, one-year, $1000 scholarships to the children and grandchildren of active members. Applications are available at http://www.elks.org/enf/scholars/legacy.cfm. Contest deadline is December 31.

 

•  National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association The National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association’s (NIAAA) purpose is to promote, facilitate and increase the knowledge and understanding of the vital role of interscholastic athletics in the educational system.  The NIAAA scholarship program fosters and recognizes the partnership between the NIAAA and secondary education.  The scholarships recognize the distinguished scholastic, leadership and sportsmanship attributes of high school student-athletes, and the importance of high school athletics in each student’s life.  Click here for complete scholarship and application information.

•  Yankton College scholarships are financial aid awarded primarily on the basis of merit and criteria.  These YC scholarships are awarded on a one-time basis to qualified high school graduating seniors and may be used toward tuition at any accredited college or university.  Applications and supporting materials must be postmarked no later than Friday, February 11, 2011.  For more information call tool free at 1-866-665-3661, or go to www.yanktoncollege.org.

•  South Dakota Department of Revenue & Regulation Seniors in your high school can participate in an essay contest where they will have a chance to win cash prizes of $5,000, $3,000, $2,000, and $1,000.  An information packet with posters and rules was sent to your high school (Attention: Finance/Business/FACS teacher).  All essay entries must be postmarked no later than Tuesday, January 18, 2011.

•  The Guide to Online Schools Scholarship program rewards students for their natural creativity and analytical thinking. Recipients will have $2000 dollars awarded directly to his or her college to pay for tuition. Applicants must be legal residents of the United States, at least 16 years old, and enrolled in an accredited community college. •  DAR Good Citizen Program and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The program is open to all senior class students enrolled in accredited public or private secondary schools. The student selected as the school's DAT Good Citizen must have the qualities of Dependability (which included truthfulness, loyalty, and punctuality); Service (which included cooperation, courtesy, and consideration of others); Leadership (which included personality, self-control, and ability to assume responsibility); and Patriotism (which includes unselfish interests in family, school, community, and nation) to an outstanding degree. The DAR citizen scholarship consists of two parts Part I consists of several questions asking the students to describe how he/she gas tried to manifest the qualities of a good citizen. This part may be completed at home and is to be submitted together with a copy of their official grade transcript and two letters of recommendation. Part II is to be administered under the supervision of faculty or DAR member. It must be completed in one sitting within a two-hour time limit, and without assistance of reference materials. Each State Winner receives a cash award in the amount of $250. The National Winner will be invited to Washington D.C. to attend DAR Continental Congress and be awarded a $3,000 scholarship, an inscribed silver bowl, a National DAR Good Citizens pin and certificate. The National Second Place Winner will receive $1,000 scholarship. The Third Place Winner will receive a $750 scholarship. The remaining 6 geographical Division Winners will each receive a cash award in the amount of $500. Each year a DAR candidate is selected by De Smet school officials, the candidate completes the application process with the principal.

 •  National Merit Scholarship NMSC conducts privately financed annual competitions for recognition and college undergraduate scholarships through its programs. High School students enter these competitions by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test usually as juniors, and meeting other published entry/participation requirements. These requirements are given in the PSAT/NMQT Student Bulletin sent to high schools for distribution to students. The Bulletin explains steps in the NMSC competitions and describes groups of students honored and awards offered; it also provides sample PSAT/NMQT questions with hints and tips for answering them and a practice test for self-scoring. Each year's PSAT/NMQT is the qualifying test designated for entry to particular year's competitions.

Junior students who take the PSAT in October receive their test results in December. Those students who have scores which qualify them to be National Merit Scholarship Finalists are notified in September their senior year.

 

•  The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) once again is sponsoring the annual National High School Essay Contest. The purpose of the contest is to increase awareness of the ready mixed concrete industry among our younger generation while looking to develop the next generation of industry leaders. Possible themes include concrete's benefits to society; how concrete affects the environment; and using concrete to build homes, commercial buildings, bridges or roads. Essays should demonstrate a student's awareness of concrete's role as a building material in homes, commercial buildings, streets and highways.  SDRMCA's Essay Committee will select South Dakota's winning essay to be forwarded for consideration in the national contest.  SDRMCA is offering cash prizes for the first place ($200) and runner-up ($50) winners selected from South Dakota. NRMCA is offering up to a $5000 scholarship toward tuition for the national winner. Entries must be postmarked by November 5, 2010.

 

•  South Dakota Farmers Union Foundation Scholarship Program takes pride in announcing the availability of scholarships to applicants whose parents are members of South Dakota Farmers Union.  Eligible youth include high school seniors who will be freshmen at a post-secondary institution of higher learning and those currently in their freshman year of school at the post-secondary level. Applicants do need to attend an in-state post-secondary school in order to apply for a scholarship. •  Golden West Publications is pleased to award a $500.00 scholarship to a graduating senior with each issue we publish.

In Order to Qualify:

   1. You must currently be a senior in high school.

2. Your high school must be in one of the following states: Colorado, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, or Wyoming.

3. You must have a grade point average of 2.5 or better.

4. You must have plans to attend college after graduation (the college can be located in any state).

Write an essay (600-1000 words, double-spaced) about a personal encounter you or someone you know has had with drug and/or alcohol abuse, how it was dealt with, what you learned from it, and what was right or wrong (in your opinion) about the way the incident or problem was handled.

The writer of the winning essay will receive the Alert Scholarship and have his or her essay and photo published in ALERT Magazine.

•  Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) will award $12,500 in college scholarships, including $5,000 to the student with the best essay. FIRE defends civil liberties on behalf of thousands of students and faculty members on our nation's college campuses. To learn more about what FIRE does, visit www.thefire.org

FIRE is again looking for bright, college-bound high school seniors to write an essay about how American universities betray the purpose of a university and violate the constitutional guarantees of free expression as depicted in two documentaries found at www.thefire.org/multimedia

In addition to the $5,000 scholarship, the first place winner's essay will be featured on FIRE's website, and the winner will receive an all-expense-paid invitation to the 2011 Campus Freedom Network Conference in Philadelphia. One second place winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship and five runners-up will each receive a $1,000 scholarship. The competition is open to all college-bound high school seniors enrolled in an American high school, and the essay must be 700-1,200 words. •  Mediacom Communications is again offering $1,000 non renewable scholarships to senior high school students in areas of 15 states where it conducts business in its North Central Division through its World Class Scholarship Program. Mediacom Communications will award up to 50 scholarships of $1,000 each to graduating high school students attending accredited post-secondary institutions (e.g., a four-year university, a two-year community college, a technical institution or other institutions that provide further training and education beyond high school) in the fall of 2011. While it is not required that a student be a Mediacom customer, applicants must live in the region serviced by the North Central Division of Mediacom. Applications for the World Class Scholarship Program may be obtained via the Internet at www.mediacomworldclass.com  The application deadline is February 11, 2011.

•  Thelma Foster Scholarship for Junior Members American Legion Auxiliary 2010-2011 One scholarship in the amount of $300 shall be awarded each year. The scholarship is a gift, not a loan. Candidates shall be Junior members of the South Dakota American Legion Auxiliary, and said Junior to have held membership in the American Legion Auxiliary for the past three years and must now hold a Junior membership card for the current year, or have turned 18 years of age in her Senior year of school. Applicants must be in their Senior year or graduates of an accredited high school, but cannot have attended an institution of higher learning. Applications can be acquired from your school's guidance counselor and are due by March 1.

•  American Legion Auxiliary - Department of South Dakota $500 Scholarship for College/University or technical institute 2010-2011 South Dakota American Legion Auxiliary shall award annually two $500 scholarships for a college/university and two $500 scholarships for technical institutions, in order to further education beyond high school level. The applicant shall be - the child or grandchild of a veteran, or the child or grandchild of a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. - not under sixteen nor over twenty-two years of age. - financially unable to attend a university or technical institute after graduation from high school. - a resident of South Dakota. - a first time winner of this award; an applicant who has previously been awarded this scholarship is ineligible. Applications can be acquired from your school's guidance counselor and are due by March 1.

•  $400 Senior Member Scholarship 2010-2011 American Legion Auxiliary - Department of South Dakota South Dakota American Legion Auxiliary shall award annually a $400 scholarship to be used for attending either a technical institution or college/university. The applicant must be a Senior member, and have been a Junior or Senior member of the South Dakota American Legion Auxiliary for at least three years, and be a current member. She must be in need of Financial assistance. Applications can be acquired from your school's guidance counselor and are due by March 1.
